Vitamin D Status and Cancer Incidence and Mortality: Something New Under the Sun
According to an article on news-merical.net citing research involving 47,800 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study cohort, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers noted 4286 cases of cancer and 2025 cancer deaths, estimating vitamin D levels by recording each man's dietary intake and supplementation, skin pigmentation, adiposity, geographic residence, and leisure-time physical activity. According to the article, the authors observed that an increase in vitamin d levels of approximately 1500IU daily correlated with a 17% reduction in total cancer incidence and 29% reduction in total cancer mortality. click for more...


Fish oil may help protect against retinal degenerative diseases
An invited paper published in Trends in Neuroscience describes research from the Neuroscience Center of Excellence at LSU Health Sciences Center, reporting on the role that omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil play in protecting cells in the retina from degenerative diseases like retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. According to the researchers, DHA is a precursor to neuroprotectin D1 (NPD1), a major neuroprotective compound, and DHA is found to promote protective cell signaling as well as stimulating the production of NPD1. click for more...


Vitamin D and Calcium May Lower Diabetes Risk
According to a Retuers Health article citing a study published in the March issue of Diabetes Care, researchers at Tufts-New England Medical Center examined data on over 83,000 women enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study in which vitamin D and calcium intake from food and supplements was monitored every two to 4 years. The researchers observed that women with high intakes of vitamin D and calcium appear to have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, seeing a 13% lower risk of diabetes specifically among those with the highest level of vitamin D intake from supplements.
